Making Tax Digital

Good news!

The date when Making Tax Digital (MTD) becomes compulsory for small businesses and landlords has been put back to April 2020 at the earliest. VAT will still be brought into MTD from April 2019, but this still gives small businesses and landlords plenty of time to prepare for the change. We very much hope that it will also give HMRC time to have their systems ready to cope.

MTD is set to be the biggest change to the tax system since the introduction of self-assessment 20 years ago. All the professional accountancy bodies have serious concerns about the haste with which this change is being implemented, the lack of detail about many aspects of how it will work, and the availability of the technonology to support it. Despite these concerns, the Government and HMRC seem determined to press ahead. We will update this page with new briefings on the latest developments as they become available, so please do check it regularly.
