Charities & social enterprises

For over 25 years we have been passionate about serving charities and social enterprises in the UK and far beyond.  Our involvement in this field has taken us around the world, working not just in the UK and Western Europe but also in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, the Sub-Continent and Eastern Europe. Here are just some of the ways in which we might help your organisation:

Governance & management support

We know each organisation is individual and different. We use that knowledge to provide trustees and managers with the assurance that their charity is managing its resources effectively. Our team has a deep understanding of the governance and management of charities and social enterprises and, as we are also commercial accountants, we can look at your objectives and advise on a range of business activities to help your organisation achieve the best outcomes.

As a charity or social enterprise, you face complex regulation and accounting requirements. You need to comply with the Charity SORP, the Charities Act and other laws as well as gift aid, VAT and Capital Gains Tax - the list goes on and on. On top of that every funder seems to have different reporting requirements. We can help you bring this all together as efficiently as possible.

And that is at the heart of all our work with you; as you help and support your beneficiaries so we aim to help and support you, empowering you to find your own answers rather than depending on us. But we will always be with you when you want that little bit extra.

New ventures - getting it right from the start

Do you have a passion driving you to start a new organisation to make our world a little bit better? Are you thinking about new activities for an older organisation? We can help right from the start. Have you thought about the organisational and regulatory implications? Talk to us before you go too far and we can help you find the best constitution and structure. By getting it right from the beginning you can be confident of meeting your objectives and avoiding nasty surprises later, when it may be too late to put things right.

Tax planning

Why tax planning? Charities don't pay tax, right? Wrong! Although there are exemptions, charities and voluntary organisations can be liable to VAT, corporation tax and capital gains tax. We have even encountered small local clubs with constitutions drafted so badly that the Trustees could be personally liable for income tax on the club's income!

The charity team at Wortham Jaques has sound, in depth knowledge and experience of the tax issues facing your organisation. Whether you’re looking for tax advice regarding a one off transaction, regular end of year tax planning, or longer term strategic tax planning, Wortham Jaques can help your organisation to make the most of planning opportunities and to avoid tax pitfalls no matter what your circumstances.

Accounting Services

Whether your organisation is newly formed or well established, accurate financial information is essential to enable the Trustees to achieve and demonstrate good governance and compliance with their statutory and regulatory obligations. Wortham Jaques's accounting services will help you to achieve accurate record-keeping and reporting. We also provide support on issues such as initial accounting system setup, cost-containment, tax planning, investments, and employee benefit and profit-sharing plans.
These services include but are not limited to:

  • Accounting system setup and support
  • Bookkeeping (Monthly, quarterly, or annual)
  • Preparation and submission of VAT returns
  • Payroll processing
  • Cash flow budgeting and forecasting
  • Preparation of monthly or quarterly management accounts
  • Preparation of annual financial statements
  • Employee benefit and profit-sharing plans
  • Corporation tax planning and tax return preparation

Assurance and financial reporting

Assurance reviews

These provide limited assurance to third parties. The work carried out typically involves analytical procedures and examination of a very small number of transactions. An example of this type of report would be an Independent Examination of charity accounts.

Compilation reports

These reports are usually for compliance purposes only and confirm that the financial statements have been drawn from the records and information provided by the organisation. They do not provide any assurance for third parties.

Bookkeeping and VAT compliance

Accurate record keeping is essential for the good governance of your organisation. It is also the key to preparing accurate accounts and, when appropriate, VAT returns. VAT errors can and do incur penalties from HMRC.

The trouble is that bookkeeping can be complicated and time consuming, taking up resources that could be better employed in furthering your organisation's objectives. At Wortham Jaques we have a range of cost effective solutions to minimise the burden, from taking over your bookkeeping completely to setting up a system that makes the most effective use of staff or voluntary workers, freeing up their time to focus on your core activities.

Payroll services

Like bookkeeping, payroll administration can be a drain on your organisation's human resources. Wortham Jaques offers a comprehensive payroll service to relieve you completely of the weekly/monthly burden of payroll processing. If you wish to keep your payroll function 'in house' we can help you reduce the time spent on administration by implementing a cost effective computerised payroll system that will help ensure correct and timely RTI submissions.

Employee Benefits, Pension, and Profit-Sharing Plans

Choosing and administering benefit plans for your employees is often a complex process. Wortham Jaques can help you develop, implement, and administer your benefit, retirement, and profit-sharing plans with an eye towards rewarding your employees and incentivising them to go the extra mile in achieving your organisation's goals. We can also help maximise the tax advantages in implementing these plans to ensure that your employees gain the maximum benefit as a reward for all their hard work on behalf of the cause.

Cash Flow and Budgeting Analysis

Cash flow is your organisation's life blood. Good cash management can improve liquidity, reduce costs, and increase the funds available for the furtherance of your organisation's objectives. Wortham Jaques can help you maintain optimal cash flow levels by preparing forecasts and budgeting accordingly, helping you to analyse your spending, and rebalance your budget to achieve the best possible cash flow. This planning can be revisited if and when there are major changes in your organisation to ensure that you continue operating at an optimal level. With our help and guidance, you can always be confident of keeping on top of your organisation's finances.

Company secretarial services

If your organisation is structured as a limited company, or if it is going to be, Wortham Jaques can provide a complete and cost effective company secretarial service, including but not limited to:

  • Company formation
  • Preparing and filing annual returns
  • Minutes of board or shareholder meetings
  • Appointments/resignations of directors and secretaries
  • Share issues or reorganisations
  • Providing share certificates
  • Amendments to Articles of Association
  • Dividend planning and issuing dividend vouchers

Auto Enrolment (AE)

AE is the requirement for all employers to make an approved pension scheme available to their employees. Eligible employees must be enrolled automatically into the scheme and employers must contribute towards it. The requirement is being phased in, with each employer being allocated a ‘staging date’ which is the date by which they must implement an approved scheme.

Larger employers have already reached their staging dates. Now it’s the turn of smaller employers, all of whom have been allocated a staging date sometime between now and the end of 2017. Getting an approved scheme in place takes time, so if you have employees you must take action now. There are stiff penalties for failure to comply. Do you know your staging date? If not we can find out for you, just give us a call with your PAYE reference to hand.

Once a scheme is in place there are mandatory administrative procedures that employers must follow in a range of different circumstances. As always with new regulations, these will place a proportionately higher burden on smaller employers. The good news is we have the systems in place to cope with all the requirements on your behalf.

Accounting software support

Accounting software can provide useful and timely information in the form of financial statements, reports and graphs. However, it can only provide this information if you purchase the right product and then install, setup and use it properly. We don't just help you use the software, we help you use it more efficiently and more effectively.

Wortham Jaques offers the following solutions to help meet your accounting software needs:

We can provide cost effective training sessions at your premises or ours.

Installation and setup

We can install and configure accounting software in either single or multi-user mode and assist new users with initial setup. We can also help experienced users manage their accounting function more effectively by improving their current setup.

Our support service can provide you with any installation, setup or operational assistance you might need.

Our review service involves checking your accounting records and making any corrections, adjustments or reclassifications necessary to ensure that the financial information you receive accurately reflects the financial condition of your organisation. Reviews may be conducted at any time, but we recommend monthly reviews to provide you with up-to-date information and feedback about your business.
